It’s not the boogie man, but there is a boogie man

Is this a Florida Joke?

So the Governor of Florida signed a law recently to mandate teaching the evils of communism in the public schools starting in kindergarten. Yeah, he doesn’t think high school students can think critically about the history of slavery in the United States but he thinks kindergarteners can grasp the evils of communism? There is no way to make this appropriate for kindergarteners. Are we going to tell them not to share because that’s communist? The only thing you can do is brainwash them, like the failed Just Say No campaign of the Reagan years. But even Just Say No was for older kids, as it wouldn’t be appropriate for kindergarteners.

I know. This is Florida. Florida jokes are a thing. But still.

It is not so out in left field when you remember that Florida is the state where many Cubans migrated to escape the Communist Revolution in 1959, or are their descendants.

Yes, the governor knows this is a popular stance among his Cuban constituents, but it is a given among conservatives in general. They know they are anti-communist even if they don’t know what communism is.

What Are You Afraid of?
