Listening to invitations to venture out

I like my life. I like my morning walks, my weekly shopping trips, and my daily decisions on what needs to be done. It is so easy to stay in this comfort zone, in this safe radius of experience. But something in me, a semi-conscious self, prods me out every so often. The dilemma is whether or not to listen. I recognize that this semi-conscious self is smarter than the conscious self, so I attempt to be aware enough to listen.

My connections to the outside world, the world outside of my comfort zone, comes to me via email or Instagram, which is the one platform I visit on a daily basis. IG is my guilty pleasure and is intentionally curated. My feed reflects my interests in art, politics, culture, language, music. On my feed last week, I saw a post from Jamaica Osorio, a Hawaiian scholar, poet, activist who I follow. She said she and her father Jon (a Hawaiian historian and musician) would be at an event on the weekend. The flyer read: ”Embodying Ea Through Mele and Education. Jonathan Osorio and Heoli Osorio explore Hawaiian ways of knowing and being through mele.” Her post with the flyer said, “Come join us.” That spoke to me, I put it on my calendar and to-do list.
